ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton visited the Western North Dakota Synod on April 23, 2014, as part of a 4-day tour with stops in South Dakota, Western North Dakota, Eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota.
While in Bismarck, Bishop Eaton shared her vision of the church in this day with close to 200 pastors, diaconal ministers, and congregation members who gathered to hear her at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Bismarck.
With humor, wit, and wisdom, Bishop Eaton explored what it means to be church together as the three expressions of the ELCA – congregation, synod and churchwide. She emphasized the hunger she sees in the world for the unique gifts of Lutheran theology in this day and age. She spoke of the need for creative and committed leadership in our congregations and challenged those gathered to move beyond their church walls with Christ’s love in their words and their care for neighbors and one another. Eaton also took questions from those gathered and met with the Western North Dakota Synod Council in the evening.
An archived video of her presentation is available at http://www.churchofthecross.org/stream-online.asp.
The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton was elected as the ELCA’s fourth presiding bishop at the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Pittsburgh last August.
A free will donation was taken for lunch prior to the presentation to benefit Heart River Bridges of Hope, a partnership ministry in our synod, which serves youth incarcerated at the North Dakota Youth Correctional Center in Mandan. We give thanks to our synod’s four Bible Camps who covered the lunch expenses so that the full donation was able to go to this important ministry.
